The Color of the Year is a Pantone project that connects color and culture, creating a dialogue with the community of designers, enthusiasts and professionals who work with color. Emphasizing how much color can represent and convey global culture also means giving voice to a universal language that expresses itself through color and crosses genders, generations and geographies. As will be done with Viva Magenta, the color of the year 2023.
The roots of Viva Magenta
Viva Magenta was introduced by the Pantone Institute as “an unconventional shade for an unconventional time.” Full of meanings and emotions, it becomes the symbol of rebirth in this era marked by three years of pandemic, war, economic instability, social unrest and climate change.
Descending from the red family, Viva Magenta embodies life force, vigor, courage, joy and optimism. It is a shade of red that straddles the line between crimson and carmine. It doses red and blue with balance, hot and cold, thus becoming a hybrid color that is as inclusive and multidimensional as the world we live in.
In this powerful and inspiring color, nature is expressed in all its dynamism and exuberance. Humanity is rediscovering the value of connecting with nature, incorporating it into daily life in the form of plants, flowers, and living walls. It also means putting a greater focus on well-being and life energy by seeking better lifestyles based on natural, chemical-free foods and outdoor activities.
The very origins of this color are deeply connected to nature, as it was once produced by certain species of cochineal. These are small insects from which carmine-red and crimson-red pigments were obtained, which were used in the past to dye yarns and fabrics. The amount of pigment obtainable from cochineals was so small and of such quality that it was a very valuable and sought-after dye, and over time it was replaced by artificial dyes.

How to use Viva Magenta in home and interiors
The primal force that this color expresses is assertive, not aggressive, a principle well captured by the expression chosen by Pantone to describe it: “a fist in a velvet glove.” And velvet itself, to upholster a sofa, is one of the suggestions given by Pantone for interiors, along with coloring a wall in Viva Magenta to lend drama to a room.
Velvet, with its silky sheen that creates variations of light and color tones, is the most suitable fabric to give depth to red hues. All of our velvets in the color “Ibisco” (hibiscus) recall the color of the year Viva Magenta and decline it in beautiful decorative patterns that will give your seating and accessories, such as cushions, or curtains, a touch of refined splendor. Here are some examples.
Fabric bags in Viva Magenta
This dynamic color also imparts positivity and a sense of vitality to Bevilacqua bags, which are a source of inspiration every day.
The Bianca clutch in Griccia velvet is the accessory that can make any outfit special for both day and evening. It measures 24×16 cm with a depth of 2 cm: plenty of personality in a small precious object.
So is the Peggy bag, very feminine and delightfully cheeky, in splendid Fresie velvet with a Giardino motif that picks up the magenta-red shade in a refined combination of colors and measures 25.5x19x14 cm.
